Kongde Peak Climbing - Trip Overview

When you hear the word "Everest", you start imagining heaven of snow-filled mountains.
Since 1953, after a successful Everest summit, climbers and trekkers have honored
Khumbu. Climbing the tallest peak, Everest, to trekkers peaks like Kongde Peak, Khumbu is
a popular destination among the alpine enthusiasts across the continents.
Kongde Peak, also known as Kwangde Ri locally, stands at 6,187 metres. Rising at this
altitude, Kongde Peak is a spectacular mountain in Lumding Mountain Range. This peak
stands so tall that everyone on the Everest base camp trek route can see it from Lukla to
Tengboche.

Sitting on the North-West face of Namche Bazar, Kongde Peak seems spectacular from
Syangboche. It feeds many glaciers to the pristine Dudh Koshi and Lumding river to the east
and west, respectively. Even though it is classified as a trekking peak, summiting it is not
everyone's cup of tea.

The multiple exposed ridges at the Eastern face of Lumding Peak make the summit of
Kongde tough to climb. This mountain sits on the border between Khumbu and Rolwaling
mountain range. Climbing the route to Kongde Base Camp and up to high camps and
summits requires proper acclimatisation. Thus, climbing Kongde Peak demands a mix of
technical expertise and physical endurance.

Two faces, North and South, from where most prefer to climb Kongde Peak, are equally
challenging to scale this peak to summit. The strenuous technical section of the North face
and negligibly climbed and much-exposed ridges to the South face of Kongde both demand
high climbing expertise.

Arguably, Kongde Peak is the best place for Everest panoramas sightseeing because it sits
in front of the Namche and Everest region. Ama Dablam, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Everest,
Tauche, and Lhotse are completely visible from Kongde Peak and its base camp. On the
Northern face of it, the revered Rolwaling peaks stand tall. The summit climb of Kongde
Peak is worth the endurance of climbing.
